My practice has always been diverse because I view the process of change as covering all aspects of our lives.

I began working with children in 1968. In 1973 I began my professional career with an advanced degree. Now I work with adolescents, adults in individual therapy, couples therapy and family therapy.

Depending on the presenting issue I will also work with children as young as eight years old. I work with couples with a focus on developing rules and tools for communications. Working with multiple family members may be relevant since the family system has a profound effect on our ability to feel safe in our daily functioning.

For twenty-five years I have worked with athletes at all levels of competition from Professional, Olympic, Collegiate, High School, and the competitive weekender. Life, Business, and athletics are all metaphors for each other, and how we perform in one area is likely to be how we perform in the other areas. Besides the above, I work with high conflict divorce cases as a Mediator/Arbitrator, a Special Advocate, and a Child Family Investigator and I also do parent/child reunification therapy.

Life should be enjoyed, and lived for today so we can accomplish our goals tomorrow.

PHILOSOPHY

“Once you stop being who you do not want to be,
you make room for you to come out.”

I have been saying this for many years and this is a fundamental belief from which I operate. I have been working with children and adults since 1968, and since 1973 with an advanced degree. I was originally trained in a classical psychoanalytic/ego oriented approach. This has proven invaluable for diagnostic purposes that allow me to have a deeper understanding of our intra-psychic functioning. Since I have been in practice for a long time, and have pursued continuing education throughout my career, I have studied and utilized many different theoretical concepts to deepen the quality of my work. At this time all the various theoretical approaches have become integrated and synthesized into my personal style. I give credit to all the theoreticians that have educated me, and thank them for allowing me the opportunity to develop my approach from their foundations. Most recently I have spent many years studying Somatic Experiencing. This has allowed me to better understand the connection between the mind and the body, more specifically, the brain and the Autonomic Nervous System. The mind and the body are two separate yet synergistically entwined systems that affect each other. Both will typically need to be addressed in the course of therapy. I have also studied Neuron theory, and the brain process in relation to psychological and physiological functioning. We will look at various attachment issues and styles, and focus on repairing old wounds by increasing our positive functions now. This will move us from the all-to- familiar place of being stuck, to progressing with more pleasure, joy and deeper connections today.

I am a licensed clinical social worker, and I not only work with the psychological/intra-psychic issues, but I also look to understand your interpersonal relationships as well. Who we are is, and has been affected by many external systems. Your family of origin, your current family, your social group, and your work environment all play a vital role in your day-to-day responses. Our understanding the interplay between the intra-psychic and the inter-related issues will be beneficial to your developing the types of responses that will better soothe your psyche, and allow for more harmonious interactions, regardless of the task at hand.

I like to work in a direct manner with clear intentions. This is a good way to keep our focus and maximize the economy of our energy. This style will bring the potential of your inner process to a higher fruition. The word therapy connotes “change”, and that is why we need to pass through the judgments constricting our functioning, and forward moving process. Being open to clearly and honestly addressing who we are will bring our lives to having more harmonious relationships; better relationships with others, and with ourselves. This becomes the goal. This will require we look at both the rougher edges of our functioning, as well as honor the nicer components of who we are. Either or both may be difficult to accept. We ultimately are looking for an internal harmonic resonance that will support a stronger resiliency when life presents its challenges.

Besides integrating various therapeutic approaches, I encourage not just my clients, but myself as well, to have “conscious intent” for each session. By having conscious intent, we can better focus on the relevant details that will help you pragmatically move forward in a constructive manner that will deepen your connections. Our history does not have to govern our present, nor our future. Being in the moment/here and now, also will not necessarily bring us to where we wish to be. I firmly believe that the coordinated effort of having conscious intent in every action, by tending to the details in the present moment, and by listening to the signals our bodies are sending us, we can make the present better, and the future will follow accordingly. Yes, our past will still exist, but it does not have to be the governing force of our lives. Learning to maximize and grow our positive mental resources will be what helps our performance in all areas of our existence. James Thurber wrote, “Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness.”

We are both teachers and learners in this open explorative therapeutic process, and I welcome any questions you may have.

Whether I am working with a child, an adolescent, an adult, a couple, or with an athlete, the process remains the same: to become better connected with ourselves, deepening our harmonic resonance, and becoming more resilient. In this way the quality of our life experiences are enhanced while maximizing our energy out put, so the end product is a harmonious resolution that brings internal peace, presence, and joy.

I have personally been in many forms of therapy throughout my life. I benefited from over 5 years of 5 days a-week psychoanalysis, in more traditional psychotherapy, couples therapy, and in Somatic Experiencing Therapy. Acupuncture, and various forms of massage therapy have also brought an awakening to my body and mind. I believe there are many avenues to unlock the more frozen components of our mind and body. Together we will work to find a suitable path for you.

Thank you and I look forward to our journey together.
